Your Pal Bill

I Live Here Now

As I mentioned in my most recent post, I got a new job this summer. For the last four months I've been working at DLCD, and so far things are going great. For the first 6 weeks or so I was stuck commuting to Salem each day from Beaverton, or even occasionally Tillamook. This could not stand, as the afternoon slog, in particular, was long, slow and annoying.

I have been more fortunate since then, as I closed on a house in Salem at the end of August and moved in over the course of September. The best thing is the location. I have an under-10-minute walk to work now, a definite improvement! Also within close walking distance are a supermarket, restaurants, downtown Salem, the train station, etc. It has been fabulous so far. I have been able to park my car for week-long spans of time (in a garage, hooray) and rely on my feet, bike, bus and train to get around.

I was hesitant to move to Salem, as it had not enjoyed a very exciting reputation with me. However, most people I consulted rightly pointed out that it certainly would be an improvement over Tillamook. So far my new home has exceeded my expectations. For now I'm okay with the fact that I don't get any vacation time for the first six months at my job.

Also new to me is being a homeowner. I have gone back and forth between "yay awesome" and "what on earth am I doing?!" several times, but as I get more settled, I certainly think it was a good decision. The Salem real estate market is a relative bargain compared to the metro area, so I didn't have to pay a lot for my little house. The one thing that I would have liked is maybe a little loft or condo instead (not a fan of the yard work), but there aren't really any available in Salem. So, here I am!
