California, Here We Come

I took last Friday and Monday off of work to spend an extended weekend in the Bay Area. The annual family vacation to see the grandparents + family has fragmented a bit over the past 10 years or so. This year my sister wasn't able to come but my brother was for the first time in a long time. I flew down while my parents and my brother + family drove down.

On the way "down" I flew via Seattle, where upon leaving the plane, we were given the choice of front or rear door. I chose the rear, because you can get out via the front door any old time, right? The flights were early and on my arrival at my aunt's house I was only good for a few hours before a short nap. Shortly after awakening the Oregon people arrived as did other, more local relations.

Most of the weekend was spent in the east bay environs, spending time with the extended family. On Sunday all us Oregon folk made our way via the transbay tube to San Francisco. This was Michelle's first visit as well as Katherine's, of course. We didn't get to spend a lot of time there, but it was fairly fun- (and transit-) packed. We took the Powell-Hyde cable car (I got to hang off the side! whee!) to Fisherman's Wharf, walked around a bit, had a sundae at Ghirardelli Square. Pretty touristy, yes. We made our way back to Market Street via the historic streetcar service along the Embarcadero. We rode the Brooklyn PCC.

The trip ended with a sunset flight out of Oakland and back to Portland.
