Road Trip Day 5
We got a slow start in the morning, but soon we were on our way west on U.S. 2 over the prairie toward Glacier Park. We first arrived at East Glacier, home of the Glacier Park Lodge. We went in the lodge and explored the grounds a bit, and soon we were on our way into the park proper at Two Medicine. We took a short hike around part of the lake, then another short hike to Running Eagle Falls. The falls look normal in the spring, but then the upper falls dry up and it looks like the lower falls are just coming out of the rock! It was very cool. Soon we were continuing north to St. Mary.
At St. Mary we poked around the visitor center for a while, figuring out what we should do. We tried to get a campsite at Rising Sun, but we arrived just after the campsite filled up. We backtracked a bit to St. Mary Campground and set up camp there. Soon we were back in Rising Sun again, first for dinner, then for a boat ride on St. Mary lake.
The boat ride was fun, there was a ranger on board to talk about the things we were seeing along the way. After the boat ride, we attended a talk by the same ranger about the Geology of the park. Apparently, it has something to do with glaciers. hm! As the sun set over the mountains, we headed back to camp for what was to be our most eventful night of the trip.
At about 11 that night, the wind picked up coming down the valley, and whipped our tent around a lot. At about 3:30 in the morning one of the poles broke, so we had to strike the tent and slept the rest of the night under the stars. It ended up being quite pleasant in the end!
