Walkscore
To prove a point about the improved walkability of my new abode, I worked out some numbers over at Walkscore. The numbers are a rough guide of how walkable a place is, with a zero being a nasty place to walk, and a 100 being quite lovely.
- My most recent residence in Tillamook: 9. eep!
- The house where I grew up in Beaverton: 63
- My new house in Salem: 74!

I Live Here Now
As I mentioned in my most recent post, I got a new job this summer. For the last four months I've been working at DLCD, and so far things are going great. For the first 6 weeks or so I was stuck commuting to Salem each day from Beaverton, or even occasionally Tillamook. This could not stand, as the afternoon slog, in particular, was long, slow and annoying.

Hello Blog
"Blog" is an odd word. Which doesn't explain so much my lack of such. There isn't really a good excuse for that. Trevor's explanation is probably best: I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and want to have all my perfectly linked and researched travel notes all just right before posting anything. Hence the many un-finished, un-published posts from the past few years waiting for me to get around to them. Which may or may not ever happen.

I Am Alive
Contrary to appearances on this website, I still walk among the living, and internet-enabled. I've been beset by both a large backlog of material to write here, and lack of desire to do so. Most of this has to do with my traveling, which it seems is pretty much all I write about here anymore. I'm trying to get better. Here is where I've gone in the last over-half-a-year:
August: Upper Midwest (8 states - 6 new)
October: Northeast (8 states - 7 new)
November: Colorado
January: Hawai'i
Most of these travels have been toward completing my "50 by 30" goal. I'm pleased to say that as of now I've visited 49 states, with almost 2 months to go until my 30th birthday. Also in that time I will be making a trip to Barbados for a week as part of Trevor & Stacy's entourage. In the 3+ weeks between getting back and my birthday, I'll be taking my AICP exam then heading up to Alaska to make all 50!

Upper Midwest
Last weekend I made a too-quick trip through the upper midwest to bag several new states to add to my growing list. I departed PDX at 1 o'clock in the morning on Saturday, First Class (thank goodness) to Minneapolis, where I caught a connecting flight to Des Moines, where I would rent the car and begin my adventures. The first new state I visited was, of course, Iowa (state 35). I was warned on the MSP-DSM flight by a very sunburned, depressing local not to head south due to some huge race. Luckily, my plan all along was to go west, young man, through the plains of Iowa to the... uh, plains of Nebraska (36)! I hit Omaha in time to visit and wander around a surprisingly pleasant, lively market district downtown. I had a couple a of tasty slices at a local pizza joint for lunch before heading north.
